Become a Member of Youth Parliament
Norfolk County Council is looking for young people, aged 11 to 18, who want to represent other young people on a local and national stage. Nine will be democratically elected by their peers to represent the same areas as their Members of Parliament.
The elections take place in February 2012 but applications need to be submitted by Friday 6 January (deadline extended). Those who are elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) will spend two years in office and attend regional and county meetings as well as a national sitting of the UK Youth Parliament.
Alison Thomas, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “The youth parliament elections give young people a chance to get involved in the democratic process for the first time, giving them a voice in local and national decisions and helping them to champion the causes of their peers.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for any young person interested in a career in politics or those that want to set themselves apart on their university and job applications. MYPs have the chance to develop as public speakers, get to grips with current affairs and develop their ability to champion a cause. I really would urge as many young people as possible to put themselves forward.”
At this stage there is no commitment to stand and those interested are able to learn more at a hustings event in January 2012 (please note change of date). However, they do need to apply ahead of that event.
